Willow Bark Extract

INCI name: Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract

Purposes: Exfoliant, Skin-Conditioning Agent, Soothing

A natural source of salicin, the precursor to salicylic acid. Refines texture and keeps pores clear far more gently than a synthetic BHA.

Willow bark extract contains salicin, a natural glycoside. Salicin is the compound aspirin was originally derived from, and it is a chemical relative of salicylic acid, the beta hydroxy acid used across acne treatment.

The relationship is often overstated. Salicin is not salicylic acid. It converts to salicylic acid slowly and incompletely, and the concentration reaching the skin from a botanical extract is far lower than a formulated 2% BHA. Anyone telling you willow bark is a natural swap for salicylic acid at equivalent strength is overselling it.

What it actually offers is gentleness. The slow conversion means a mild, gradual effect on surface texture and pore congestion, without the dryness and irritation a full-strength BHA can cause on sensitive or compromised skin. In a daily cleanser, that is the right dose.

Willow bark also contains polyphenols and flavonoids with soothing activity independent of the salicin. Some of the calming effect people report is likely coming from those rather than the exfoliation.

It is a good example of why we formulate the way we do: the botanical version is not stronger than the synthetic. It is milder, and mild is what a product you use twice a day should be.
